Matthew van Niekerk top list of local golfers at Rochester Open Championship

Austin James shot a 70 to take a two-stroke lead af­ter the first round of the American Junior Golf As­sociation Rochester Open Champion­ship at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor.

Talia Campbell of Dallas and Andrea Wong of San Francisco are tied for the lead in the girls divi­sion with scores of 1-over-par 73.Mer­cy sophomore Chris­tine Schmitt sits in a tie for third, one stroke back.

Pittsford Mendon’s Gabrielle Sache­li is 14th (84) and Mer­cy se­nior Sara Quinn is tied for 19th (87).James, a native of Bath, Ontar­io, Canada, shot a two-under par to take the lead in the boys divi­sion of the three-round tourna­ment. Gregory Hanninen of Barrie, Ontar­io, and Austin Connelly of Las Colinas, Texas, are two strokes behind James.

Al­lendale Columbia junior Matthew van Niekerk, the runner-up at the state golf tourna­ment last sea­son, is tied for fifth at 74, making him the top local boys golfer. Brighton’s Teddy Corcoran is tied for 19th (76). Penfield’s Doug Uhazie, McQuaid’s Alex Bourdelais each shot 78 and are tied for 33rd.

Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Matt Allen is tied for 45th (80) and Fairport’s Kevin Siegel is tied for 63rd (84).Canandaigua’s Connor Rae­man is 69th (90).
