Ithaca, NY – A slow start stymied the Section V boys golf team in its bid to re-establish itself as the state’s best.

Section III of the Syracuse overcame an eight-shot deficit after Sunday’s opening round to defeat Section V by seven shots, 1,098-1105, at Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course on Monday. Section V finished fourth in 2012 after winning four straight crowns from 2008 to 2011.

“It was a long, difficult day for the team,” Section V co-coordinator Dylan Bronson said. “We got off to a very slow start and never recovered.”

Matt van Niekerk, a senior at the Allendale Columbia School, shot 74 on Monday to finish in a tie for third at 151, four shots behind champion Jensen Davis (74-73) of Shaker-II. Van Niekerk finished second, one shot behind Pittsford Mendon’s Gavin Hall at the 2011 state tournament.

Alec Bard of New Hartford-III shot 74-76 to place second at 150.

Penfield sophomore Zak Ottman shot 82 Monday to finish in a six-way tie for 15th at 158.

Both van Niekerk and Ottman earned All-State Honors.

Four Section V golfers tied for 21st at 159: Doug Kulikowski of Pittsford Sutherland (75-84); Gunnar Doyle of Pittsford Mendon (76-83) and McQuaid’s Colin Dubnik (77-82) and Andrew Galvin (76-83).

Doug Uhazie of Penfield (79-84) and Evan Gaesser of Kendall (77-82) tied for 41st and Michael Lane of McQuaid (86-86) placed 71st.
